Donating blood

I did it at last!! Donated blood for the first time and it felt sooooooooo good!!  Needle was pretty big though. Nurse asked me to look away but I was curious....hehe..didn't hurt at all..just a small ant bite feeling.

The people at the Red Cross were all very nice here in Cairns. One old lady volunteer keep asking if I wanted something to eat after I was done with the blood donating and keep offering me cheese that she took out from the fridge as she says 'it goes soft, you see, so I have to keep it in the fridge'. She must be over 70years of age by the looks of her!

All went well, they got 450ml of my blood in only 6min 50seconds!! Nurse said I'd better not be in an accident as that was very fast! It usually takes about 10minutes or so for blood donation!  My blood would come gushing out if I were to be in an accident..hehe!!

The nurse that took my blood, I asked her if it was OK to walk back as I walked to the Red Cross (about 3kms) to donate blood (not sure if I was OK to drive back since it's my first time) and she advised me against it. Oh well..............after sitting in the waiting area, drinking 2cups of coffee (I know..supposed to drink juicec but the coffee was too tempting!!), 2small bars of chocolate, a piece of cheese and biscuits, I started to take a leisurely walk back under the very hot sun. Had to stop twice though, as it was so very hot and I didn't want to over-exert myself. Reason being, I wanted to make sure I didn't feel faint or woozy (which happened for the first few minutes after they were done taking my blood) and faint somewhere on the road! Better be safe than sorry.

Next thing, maybe organ donor but since I'd again be in Papua New Guinea, no point being an organ donor in Australia, is there? Time enough for that later.

I would encourage everyone who hasn't done so to donate blood as it help saves lives.

Hi cousin,

Good for you. I supposed you did not take the 'big boy' along.

I used to dontate regularly when I was working in George Kent. You know lah, with Mat Salleh Boss (British), the Red Cross will never fail to turn up yearly at our premises. And at that time (the seventies) the Red Cross nurses were usually 'whites' and like you said, they would pamper us after the blood was drawn.

Anyway, for women, you cannot donate after a certain age. I wanted to donate when my Mom had her op, but was told by SJMC that because of my age, I cannot donate.

No, I went to Red Cross by myself as Adam was in daycare. I don't think he can sit still long enough for me NOT to worry about him running all over the place. Goodness, imagine if he were to pull some of the tubes out of the people donating blood! Don't want to go there....!!!
Yes, I am aware of age limit for donating, that's why I want to do it now and hopefully can continue doing so, wherever I am.

Haha..thanks. I was thinking if people in the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's can do it, why can't I? We have been living too much of a sedentary lifestyle and our body has been spoilt too much :)
